“Raising puppies with purpose, from day one.”

At Shore Acres Chesapeakes, we believe that how a puppy is raised makes all the difference. From the first hours of life to the moment they leave for their forever homes, our Chessie pups are nurtured through each developmental milestone with intention, enrichment, and heart.

This video series offers a behind-the-scenes look at our rearing process, showing you how we raise confident, well-balanced puppies using Puppy Culture protocols, ENS/ESI, and age-appropriate challenges every week.

Why This Matters

These videos are more than cute moments — they show the depth of care and experience behind every Shore Acres puppy. Whether you’re a future puppy parent, fellow breeder, or curious observer, we invite you to witness what it means to raise pups with heart, soul, and science.

Week-by-Week Puppy Development

Each video highlights the emotional, neurological, and physical growth taking place — and how we guide our litters with gentle structure and love.

Week 1: The Foundation Begins

⭐ Nursing, sleeping, and staying warm under mama’s watchful eye.

⭐ Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) & Early Scent Introduction (ESI) begin on Day 3.

⭐ Umbilical cords have all detached, and weight gain is steady.

⭐ Lots of tiny squeaks, wiggles, and little puppy piles in the whelping box.

Week 2: Wigglebutts & Awakening Senses

Eyes are open – first glimpses of light!

Ears still closed, but subtle head turns suggest they’re sensing vibrations.

Bigger voices during weigh-ins and ENS/ESI sessions.

Nesting and potty zone distinction is emerging.

Weight gain continues steadily, with each pup more than doubling their birth weight.

Week 3: Growing Into Their World

Eating 4 meals per day – raw turkey mash, kibble mash, and gentle protein rotation.

Nursing – briefly in between and after each meal for comfort and bonding.

Potty area upgrade – beginning to toddle toward the grass pad on their own.

Space Expansion – introduction of their small “house” with defined sleeping, play, and dining zones.

Teeth emerging – mouthing, chewing, and exploring various textures.

First play interactions – nibbling ears, paw batting, and tiny growls and barks during play.

Recognizing voices and seeking human interaction – early social engagement.

Begin brief Puppy Culture Challenges – small confidence-building tasks.

Week 4: Little Dogs in the Making

Outdoor introductions begin — brief trips outside to experience fresh air, natural ground, and natural sounds

Confident walking and early play sessions — chasing, pouncing, and playful wrestling

Eating solid meals with enthusiasm — four meals daily, nursing tapering naturally

Introduction to low enrichment items — soft toys, wobble surfaces, tunnels, and textures

Sound exposure begins — gentle household noises, voices, and movement

Clicker Training Individual Sessions — learn to take treats and power up the clicker.

Human bonding increases — pups seek out attention, climb into laps, and respond to interaction

Early confidence-building exercises — stepping over small obstacles, exploring new corners

Tail wags appear — a sure sign of comfort, curiosity, and connection

Week 5: Confidence in Motion

Structured play sessions — learning to read each other’s signals and take breaks

Potty habits strengthening outdoors using a doggie door — pups begin connecting the ground outside with potty time

More advanced enrichment items — wobble boards, tunnels, new textures, and light obstacles

Sound desensitization expands — vacuum cleaner, woodworking tools (air compressor, nail gun), doors closing, voices, and everyday household activities

Increased human engagement — pups follow people, seek interaction, and enjoy handling

Mealtime independence — eating confidently, nursing continuing but clearly secondary

Early confidence recovery — brief startle → quick bounce-back

Week 6: Expanding Horizons

Potty habits strengthening — most pups actively seek out the doggie door to go potty outside or the indoor grass pad area

Clicker Training Individual Sessions — Manding Exercise – Learn to ask politely without jumping and pawing.

Exploring the home environment — supervised walks through different rooms, flooring types, and household activities

Meeting trusted adult dogs — calm, well-mannered adults introduced one-on-one to model appropriate canine communication

Introduction to other animals — brief, controlled exposure with emphasis on neutrality and calm observation

Side-by-side ATV sound habituation — puppies experience engine sounds and vibration at a safe distance while remaining engaged and relaxed

Beginning gunshot desensitization — very distant, low-intensity exposure paired with positive experiences

Outdoor confidence continues — navigating varied terrain with curiosity and enthusiasm

Growing independence — short individual sessions away from littermates to build confidence and focus

Week 7: Confidence with Purpose

Consistent outdoor potty routine established — puppies go outside immediately upon waking, and before-and-after meals, reinforcing strong habits and clear expectations

Meals transitioned to 3 times per day — now eating gravy-style kibble only, supporting digestive consistency and preparing for go-home feeding routines

Clicker Training Group Sessions — manding (sit) exercise – learn to ask politely without jumping and pawing.

Gunshot desensitization continues at closer range — carefully layered exposure paired with play, calm handling, and quick recovery

Gear Desensitization & Introduction to water through play — shallow water games using balls and pheasant feathers to spark natural interest without pressure

Resource Guarding Prevention Exercises — teach puppies that human interaction during eating predicts calm, neutral, or positive outcomes

Car rides introduced and repeated — multiple short trips to prepare for our 40-minute drive to the vet

Ongoing interaction with trusted adult dogs — reinforcing appropriate canine communication

Increased handler focus — responding to voices, recall, and direction through play

Week 8-9: Preparing for New Beginnings & Gotcha Day Weekend

Veterinary visit completed — puppies handled the exam environment, new smells, and gentle restraint with confidence

Continued water play — curiosity and confidence growing through games and exploration

Go-home readiness — puppies are comfortable with handling, routine changes, and brief separations
