🚽 Potty Training Begins With Us

At Shore Acres Chesapeakes, we believe successful potty training doesn’t begin at 8 weeks—it starts with the breeder.

By the time your puppy comes home, they’ve already been introduced to age-appropriate elimination routines that reflect their natural instincts. This early foundation creates a smoother, faster housebreaking process in their forever homes.

Why It Starts Early

Contrary to popular belief, puppies are wired to keep their sleeping space clean. As soon as they become mobile (around 2.5–3 weeks old), they naturally begin seeking out a separate area to potty.

In the wild, wolf mothers are meticulous about keeping their den clean—and they stop cleaning up after their pups as soon as the pups begin to walk and eat solid food. The instinct to eliminate outside the “nest” is built in.

As breeders, it’s our job to support this instinct—not ignore it.

The Misty Method: Our Approach to Clean Starts

We follow the Misty Method, a structured approach to early potty training that gradually introduces puppies to separate potty zones, beginning at just 2.5-3 weeks old.

Here’s how it works:

  • Week 2-3: Puppies are introduced to a distinct potty area within their den (lined with artificial grass pads).
  • Week 4-5: We begin introducing a doggy door and short outdoor potty breaks.
  • Week 6–8: Puppies learn to potty outside on real grass in a designated area—and they love it!

By Gotcha Day, your puppy already understands the difference between “where I sleep” and “where I potty.”

Why This Matters for Families

This early potty routine creates three major benefits for you:

  1. Cleaner Puppies
Pups already associate elimination with grass or designated areas—not random spots inside.
  2. Easier Housebreaking at Home
Transitioning to your outdoor potty space is faster and less stressful for both puppy and human.
  3. Improved Communication
Potty success builds confidence. Puppies who already “get it” feel more secure in their new homes.

Clean Nest = Clear Mind

Puppies raised in messy environments where they’re forced to eliminate where they eat and sleep can lose that natural instinct—and become harder to train later.

That’s why we keep our whelping area immaculately clean. It teaches them early boundaries, builds trust, and preserves their natural hygiene preferences.

Final Thought

You may not see the results of this work right away—but you’ll feel it. You’ll notice your puppy wants to potty outside. You’ll find it easier to create a routine. And you’ll know your puppy had the best start possible.

Potty training doesn’t begin with you—it begins with us. 🐾
